Origin
It seems that the name derives from the Latin Cison caesum, with the meaning of cut, in reference to the old conditions of the area, reclaimed and cleared.

The origins of Cison are lost in the mists of time: the territory was probably inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic, finds evidence of human presence before 40,000 years ago, and other artifacts attest to human activity in the Bronze Age and the era Roman.

According to an old tradition of the village once stood, in ancient times, very far upstream, protected by the fortress of the then existing Castelaz. With the Lombard rule Valmareno was subjected to the Duchy of Ceneda bishopric autonomous from the sixth century; a fief of the emperor, was granted by Otto I as a benefit to the Bishop of Ceneda, which in turn enfeoffed accounts Da Camino. Since 1388 the fief of Valmareno came under the rule of the Venetian Republic, which appointed a mayor for these territories which had its headquarters in Cison. Later, in 1436 the county was sold as a reward for military merits of the two leaders in the service of Venice: Erasmo da Narni, known as Gattamelata, and Brandolini IV from Bagnacavallo. The domain of Valmareno will remain in the hands of the Brandolini family, with all the rights of full jurisdiction, until 1797.
The administrative reorganization following the Napoleonic and Austrian saw Valmareno divided between the districts of Ceneda, Serravalle and Valdobbiadene, while with the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, Cison became the capital city. During World War I, the territory was invaded by Austrian troops and the castle plundered and stripped of many works of art. During World War II it was used as a hospital instead. Even the town of Cison, between the wars suffered the economic crisis and saw the emigration of many of its inhabitants, a phenomenon which ceased in the sixties when the flourishing development of small industry offered new jobs.
